16 Viral Korean Serums Blind Tested: Honest Reviews & Rankings

7 min readBy CYoung

Brutal honest blind test of 16 viral K-beauty serums including COSRX, Anua, Beauty of Joseon, and more. See which ones are worth your money.

I'm tired of seeing the same serums hyped up everywhere without real honest reviews. So I did something different—I blind tested 16 of the most viral Korean serums with my makeup artist friends. No brand labels, no influencer bias, just pure texture and performance testing.

The results? Some "bestsellers" completely flopped, while a few surprises made it to the top. If you're confused about which serum to buy next, this is going to save you some serious money and disappointment.

How We Tested: The Blind Test Setup

My mom helped pour all 16 serums into unmarked bottles labeled A through P (thanks mom!). Four of us tested each one:

  • Me (CYoung): 40 years old, dry mature sensitive skin, combo in summer
  • Jay: Late 20s, combo skin (oily T-zone, dry cheeks), makeup artist who needs products that work under makeup
  • Sally: Late 20s, oily acne-prone skin, loves cooling products and skincare devices
  • Yuna: Early 30s, super sensitive skin, combo but drier than me

We rated hydration from 1-3:

  • 1 = Lightweight (like watery toners)
  • 2 = Normal serum consistency
  • 3 = Very hydrating (thick, cream-like)

No one knew which brands they were testing until after we finished rating everything.

The Winners: Top Performing Serums

🏆 Numbuzin No.5+ Vitamin Concentrated Serum

Ranked #1 by Jay, #2 by Yuna

This was the biggest surprise. Known for erasing hyperpigmentation, but we only tested texture—and it delivered. Jay said it felt slightly slippery at first but absorbed beautifully with no breakouts, even with generous application. Perfect for nighttime.

Yuna (our most sensitive tester) loved that it felt more like an emulsion and said she'd totally finish the bottle.

The real deal: Most vitamin C serums are too aggressive and drying. This one gives good hydration while still being effective for dark spots.

🏆 Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum

Ranked #1 by Sally and Yuna

Nobody expected this to win. Sally loved the smooth glide (perfect for her beauty devices) and how clean it felt on oily skin—not sticky at all. Yuna said it felt lightweight but super hydrating with the perfect scent level.

My honest take: I usually think Medicube is all marketing, not real skincare. But this serum actually works. It has more PDRN than the Anua version, and even on my dry mature skin, it was properly hydrating. Plus they do buy-one-get-one promotions at Olive Young frequently.

🏆 Goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Serum

Ranked #1 by Yuna

Yuna said this tackled her inner dryness and smelled amazing. It's always in the top rankings at Olive Young for good reason—works for almost everyone, which is its biggest strength.

Summer vibes: This is definitely more of a summer pick. Not sure how it performs in winter, but for warmer months, it's solid.

The Disappointments: Overhyped Serums

❌ Anua 7 Rice Ceramide Hydrating Barrier Serum

Ranked WORST by all three makeup artists

This was brutal to watch. Jay said it "felt like a snake crawling on her face." Sally expected some glide but got pure stickiness instead. Yuna said it just sat on the skin feeling heavy with zero cooling sensation.

The verdict: If you want a slimy texture that actually works, stick with Mixsoon Bean Essence for exfoliation or COSRX Snail Mucin. This Anua serum is all texture, no performance.

❌ Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum

Nobody picked it as best

Everyone recognized this immediately (it's everywhere), but that popularity doesn't equal amazing results. It has a slight bluish tint and feels okay, but nobody was impressed.

Reality check: This is much more popular outside Korea than inside. I couldn't even finish a small bottle because I didn't see much difference. If you have normal skin in summer, fine. But for real results? Skip it.

❌ D'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum

Ranked worst by Yuna

This is a love-it-or-hate-it product. The two-layer formula (oil and water) has a strong scent that sensitive skin types often react to. Yuna hated the smell.

Use it right: Don't think of this as a serum—it's more like a toner in spray form. I keep mine in the bathroom and use it right after showering. If you have dry mature skin, you'll need a proper serum afterward.

The Middle Ground: Decent But Not Amazing

COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Everyone immediately recognized the slimy texture. Surprisingly, our two oily-skinned testers in their 20s found it more hydrating than sticky.

Age matters: If you're under 30 with oily skin and want water-based hydration, this works. Over 40 or with dry skin? It's just... slimy fun with no real benefits.

Mixsoon Bean Essence

Rated as "okay" by everyone for hydration. But here's the thing—you're using it wrong if you're just applying it as a serum.

Pro tip: Use this for gentle exfoliation. Roll it on your skin for 5-7 minutes, and dead skin cells will come off. Your skin feels much softer afterward. For that purpose, it's worth the money.

Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Serum

Super refreshing like aloe gel, but lacking in nourishment. Perfect for oily or combo skin in summer, but dry or mature skin types will need more.

Final Thoughts

Viral doesn't mean good. Some of the most hyped serums completely flopped in our blind test, while products I'd written off (like that Medicube serum) actually impressed multiple testers.

My biggest takeaway: Your skin type and age matter more than social media hype. What works for a 20-something with oily skin won't work for mature dry skin, and vice versa.

The Numbuzin vitamin serum winning was the biggest surprise—it proves you can get anti-aging benefits without sacrificing hydration. That's rare in the vitamin C category.

Skip the disappointments, invest in what actually works. Your skin (and wallet) will thank you.

FAQ

Q: Can I use multiple serums from this list together? A: Yes, but layer from thinnest to thickest consistency. Start with the Goodal Vitamin C in the morning, then add Numbuzin at night. Don't overload your skin.

Q: Why did the COSRX Snail Mucin rank so differently? A: Age and skin type matter. Younger, oily skin found it hydrating. Mature, dry skin found it just sticky without real benefits. Know your skin type.

Q: Is the Medicube serum worth the higher price? A: If you're curious about PDRN and want something that works under makeup, yes. Wait for the buy-one-get-one sales at Olive Young to make it more affordable.

Q: Should I avoid the Anua Rice Ceramide serum completely? A: Unless you specifically love heavy, sticky textures, yes. There are much better hydrating serums that don't feel like "snakes crawling on your face."

Q: What's the difference between testing texture vs. long-term results? A: This test focused on immediate feel, absorption, and hydration. For anti-aging or acne results, you need 4-6 weeks of consistent use. But if a serum feels terrible on application, you won't stick with it anyway.
