12 Viral K-Beauty Products That Aren't Worth Your Money: Honest Reviews
Brutally honest reviews of 12 overhyped K-beauty products including Medicube gel masks, KAHI balm, VT lip plumpers, and more viral TikTok fails.
We've all been there—scrolling TikTok, seeing some "miracle" K-beauty product with millions of views, thinking "maybe this time it's different." Then you buy it, try it, and... disappointment.
I've done the dirty work for you. I bought 12 of the most viral K-beauty products that everyone's obsessing over and tested them on my 40-year-old, dry, sensitive skin. Some of these hurt my wallet AND my face.
Before we start: everyone's skin is different, but most beauty content is made by people in their early 20s who don't understand mature skin concerns. If you're over 30 (especially over 40), this review will actually be relevant to your skin needs.
The Overhyped Gel Masks That Waste Your Time
❌ Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Gel Mask + BIODANCE Bio Collagen Mask
The hype: Overnight collagen boost, plump skin, anti-aging miracle
The reality: Expensive disappointment
Both brands sell these "revolutionary" gel masks that harden on your face. BIODANCE says you can sleep in it overnight, Medicube claims 1-3 hours of wear time. Here's what actually happens:
Problems with these masks:
- Medicube's sheet becomes transparent after 40-50 minutes (not 3 hours)
- BIODANCE sheet is thinner and more fragile
- After 30 minutes, the cooling effect disappears
- You need to do your full skincare routine BEFORE applying (they don't mention this)
- If you use on clean skin without other products, your face feels tight and dry in the morning
My honest take: I've been doing makeup in Korea for 9 years. A $2 Mediheal or Abib sheet mask works just as well. These are all marketing, no substance. The fermented ingredients can irritate sensitive skin, and after wearing for 2 hours, I wanted to scratch my face off.
Verdict: Complete fail. Save your money and time.
The Exfoliant That Tricks You
⚠️ Dr. Melaxin Rice Enzyme Exfoliant
The hype: Gentle rice enzyme removes dead skin
The reality: It's not actually your dead skin peeling off
This has been popular in Korea for years. You rub it on dry skin after cleansing, and it "peels" - but that peeling isn't your actual dead skin. It's the product formula creating that effect.
What it actually does:
- Makes skin feel slightly smoother (that's it)
- Doesn't shrink pores or remove blackheads
- Rice version is softer and smells better than original
- Very mild results for the effort
My verdict: You can try it, but don't expect dramatic results. It's more of a placebo effect than real exfoliation.
The Sticky Balm Everyone's Obsessing Over
❌ KAHI Multi Balm
The question: Why is this getting global hype?
The answer: Good marketing, mediocre product
This is basically a giant lip balm that was all over Korean ads 3 years ago. Every ajuma (older Korean woman) in my classes asked about it.
The problems:
- If you're from a tropical country or have oily/combo skin, you'll hate this
- Super sticky, especially in warm weather
- Can't use before makeup unless you use tiny amounts
- Any "glow" disappears quickly as it absorbs
- Inconvenient despite the stick format
Who it works for: Dry, mature skin over 40 in winter climates
Who should avoid: Everyone else
Verdict: Overpriced convenience product. Better than nothing, but barely.
The Vitamin Serum That's All Packaging
❌ Eqqualberry Vitamin Illuminating Serum
The hype: Brightening vitamin serum in pretty packaging
The reality: Expensive moisturizer with bad design
This looks very TikTok-worthy with its unique bottle, but the dropper doesn't reach the bottom properly. I had to store it sideways just to use the product.
The actual performance:
- Good moisturizing (similar to their other serums)
- Zero brightening effects after several days of testing
- Tiny bottle for the price
- Pretty to look at, that's about it
Better alternative: Holy Grail Gold Lift Serum (my actual holy grail) for real anti-aging and moisturizing at this price point.
Verdict: Pure marketing over substance. Skip it.
The Pharmacy PDRN Craze
⚠️ Rejuvenex PDRN Ointment vs Reou PDRN Cream
The hype: Pharmacy-grade PDRN (salmon DNA extract) for anti-aging
The reality: You need micro-needling for it to actually work
Both products are selling out at Korean pharmacies. Rejuvenex is made by the same company as Rejuran injections, so people think it's the same thing in cream form.
The science: PDRN helps with skin regeneration, but dermatologists say you need MTS (micro-needling) or Reedle Shot first to create pathways for absorption.
The problem: If you're over 45 (the target demographic), your skin might be too thin and sensitive for micro-needling at home.
My comparison:
- Rejuvenex: Feels like heavy ointment, harder to find
- Reou: More gel-cream texture, 1,200 ppm PDRN (higher concentration), kept skin plump for 3-4 hours
Better idea: Invest in a good eye cream and use it on your whole face. More effective and less complicated.
The Toner That's Just Hype
❌ Hebe Blue Toner & Cream
The marketing: Celebrity makeup artists created this brand with all the trending ingredients (PDRN, peptides, Centella)
The reality: Ordinary products with extraordinary prices
They threw every popular K-beauty ingredient into these products, which sounds impressive but doesn't mean they work better.
Better alternatives:
- Toner: I'm From Rice Toner or Laneige Cream Skin (more hydrating and affordable)
- Watery toner: Numbuzin No.1 Toner (bigger bottle, better price)
- Cream: Any basic moisturizer works the same
Verdict: Not worth the hype or price. Pure marketing targeting trend-obsessed consumers.
The Cleansing Powder Disaster
❌ Anua Rice Enzyme Brightening Cleansing Powder
The TikTok claim: Mix with toner for amazing results
The reality: Waste of product and time
If mixing cleanser with toner worked, then washing your face with toner should give you perfect skin, right? The logic makes no sense.
What actually happens:
- So slippery I had to rinse for 5+ minutes
- Left my dry skin feeling tight after all that rinsing
- Need ridiculous amounts for any "slimy" TikTok effect
- Any cleanser would work the same after 5 minutes of rinsing
My advice: Use a cleansing oil if you want deep cleansing. This is just expensive soap powder.
Verdict: Hard pass. Don't fall for TikTok tricks.
The Weak PDRN Serum
❌ [Brand Name] PDRN Serum (100 ppm)
The problem: Only 100 ppm PDRN compared to 10,000 ppm in better serums
What it really is: Basic hydration serum with PDRN marketing
TikTok mixing trend: People show mixing this with cream - don't do this. Let serums absorb first, then apply cream. That's basic skincare layering.
Better alternative: Medicube PDRN serum has much higher concentrations and actually works.
Verdict: Waste of money for minimal PDRN benefits.
The Lip Plumpers That Burn
❌ VT Reedle Shot Lip Plumper (Beginner & Expert)
The promise: Angelina Jolie lips
The reality: Bee sting pain with unpleasant scent
I tested beginner on bottom lip, expert on top lip:
Results:
- Beginner: Did absolutely nothing
- Expert: Burned like crazy, left lip edges red and irritated
- Scent: Honestly unpleasant
- Other testers: Same painful reaction
The effect: Yes, it plumps, but it feels like you got stung by a bee. Not worth the pain.
Verdict: Hard pass unless you enjoy lip torture.
The Pretty But Impractical Tint
⚠️ ENTROPY Makeup Cham Tint (Key Ring Style)
The appeal: Super trendy key ring design, unique colors
The problems: Way heavier than expected
Who should avoid: New moms, anyone wanting practical makeup
Who might like it: Teenagers, people who prioritize trendy aesthetics over practicality
The good:
- Unique peachy coral shade (very different from typical K-beauty colors)
- Not too sticky
- Western-brand vibe with color selection
The bad:
- Heavy to carry around
- Not long-lasting
- More novelty than practical makeup
Verdict: If you have 100+ lip products and want something unique, maybe. If you want practical daily makeup, skip it.

Final Thoughts: Don't Fall for the Hype
The beauty industry thrives on FOMO and viral trends. Most of these products aren't necessarily bad, but they're definitely not worth the hype or price. Social media makes everything look revolutionary when it's often just basic skincare with fancy packaging.
My advice:
- Stick to proven ingredients and brands
- Don't buy into TikTok mixing trends
- Consider your actual skin type and age
- Invest in basics that work rather than trendy gimmicks
Remember, the most viral products are often the most marketed, not the most effective. Your skincare routine doesn't need to be complicated or expensive to work.

FAQ
Q: Are all viral K-beauty products bad? A: No, but most are overhyped. Some genuinely good products go viral, but many are just good at marketing to young consumers who don't understand mature skin needs.
Q: Should I trust TikTok skincare trends? A: Be very skeptical. Most TikTok creators are young with different skin concerns. Mixing products randomly (like cleanser with toner) usually doesn't make scientific sense.
Q: What should I buy instead of these products? A: Focus on proven basics: good cleanser, hydrating toner, effective serum with proven ingredients, and proper moisturizer. Boring but effective beats trendy but disappointing.
Q: Do PDRN products actually work? A: PDRN can be effective, but concentration matters. Look for higher ppm counts and don't expect miracles from topical application alone.
