•11 min read•By CYoung

CYoung tested 8 viral K-Beauty cushion foundations. The Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion won for dry/mature skin, while TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion and espoir Pro Tailor Be Velvet Cover Cushion are best for oily/combo skin. Parnell and Fwee cushions were absolute skips.

Alright, let's talk cushion foundations. They're a K-beauty staple, promising quick, flawless coverage on the go. But with new "viral" cushions popping up every other week, how do you know which ones are actually worth your hard-earned money and which are just hype?

As someone with dry, sensitive, and thin skin (though it leans more combo in humid conditions), and with concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and visible pores, I've tried countless cushions. The Korean makeup trend right now is all about that "makeup no makeup" look – natural, transparent, and effortless. So, when a cushion claims to be the next big thing, I put it through the ultimate test: real life.

I bought and rigorously tested eight of the most talked-about Korean cushion foundations, including TIRTIR, Jung Saem Mool, Hince, Fwee, and more. My goal? To give you the brutally honest truth so you don't waste your time or money. This isn't about brand loyalty; it's about what truly performs on real skin. Let's dive in.

The Matte Cushion Showdown: High Coverage vs. Natural Finish

Matte cushions are often praised for their longevity and oil control, but they can be a minefield for those of us with dry patches or fine lines. I put five popular matte options to the test.

❌ TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion & Mask Fit AI Filter Cushion

The Hype: These TIRTIR cushions are everywhere, especially the Red Cushion, which boasts an impressive 60 shades. The AI Filter Cushion promises a blurred, perfected look.

The Reality:

  • Too Heavy, Too Matte: For anyone with dry or mature skin (especially over 45), these are a hard pass. They feel incredibly heavy and look too matte, almost like cushions from a decade ago. They're not popular in Korea because the current trend favors a more natural, less "stuffy" finish.
  • High Coverage, But at What Cost? The coverage is undeniably high – almost like a concealer. But this means it's hard to control the amount, leading to a cakey, flaky finish that highlights pores and wrinkles.
  • Shade Mismatch: TIRTIR shades run deeper and warmer than typical Korean cushions. If you're considering them, go at least one or two shades lighter than your usual.
  • Longevity (for the right skin): The Red Cushion's longevity is insane; it stayed flawless for 6 hours without touch-ups. This is its main pro.

My Honest Take: If you have very oily or combination skin, need extreme all-day wear, and have a lot to cover, the TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion might work for you – but use it sparingly, perhaps as a spot concealer rather than a full foundation. The AI Filter Cushion is from the same family and performs similarly, with the same cakey and flaky issues. For everyone else, especially those with thin, dry, or mature skin, these are a definite skip.

Verdict:

  • TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion: ✔️ For very oily/combo skin, high coverage, extreme longevity. ❌ For dry/mature skin.
  • TIRTIR Mask Fit AI Filter Cushion: ❌ Skip. Similar issues to the Red Cushion.

HERA Black Cushion Foundation & espoir Pro Tailor Be Velvet Cover Cushion

The Hype: HERA Black Cushion is an iconic product, a dominant force in the K-beauty scene years ago. Espoir's Be Velvet Cushion is another popular matte option from the Amore Pacific family.

The Reality:

  • HERA Black Cushion: This is a more contemporary matte cushion. It has a luxurious magnetic case and offers good coverage (4/5) with fine particles that prevent it from looking heavy. It's semi-matte, giving a soft glow without looking greasy. Immediately after application, it looked prettier and blurred my pores better than Espoir. However, after 10 hours, it started to fade around the nose.
  • espoir Pro Tailor Be Velvet Cover Cushion: This cushion is way more matte than Hera, with an ultra-powdery finish that means you won't need setting powder. The coverage is excellent. However, even shade 22 (which I tried instead of my usual 21) was brighter than Hera's 21. For thin skin like mine, it unfortunately highlighted fine lines and pores. Its lasting power, however, was superior to Hera's, holding strong for 10 hours.

My Honest Take: Both of these contain more powder than glowy cushions, so if you have oily or combo skin, make sure you don't skip your skincare, or they can look cakey. I personally don't use these on myself or my clients for full coverage due to their drying nature, but they could work as a targeted concealer.

Verdict:

  • HERA Black Cushion Foundation: ✔️ For a softer, more natural semi-matte finish, good initial blurring.
  • espoir Pro Tailor Be Velvet Cover Cushion: ✔️ For humid conditions, long wear, and excellent coverage, especially if you prefer an ultra-matte finish.

❌ Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion & Hince Second Skin Mesh Matte Cushion

The Hype: Parnell's "Serum Cushion" promises moisturizing benefits, while Hince's "Mesh Matte" cushion suggests a dewy finish due to its mesh design.

The Reality:

  • Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion: This was the absolute worst of the eight cushions I tested. Despite the "serum" in its name, it is not moisturizing. The finish is matte, even cakey. After just 6 hours, my pores were waving hello, my smile lines were throwing a party, and my entire base looked like it had given up. It doesn't appeal to dry/mature skin because it lacks glow, nor to oily/combo skin because of its low coverage.
  • Hince Second Skin Mesh Matte Cushion: This is a mesh cushion, which usually implies a dewy finish, but nope – it's semi-matte. You need to apply it in thin layers, or it can look dirty later. The coverage is matte, and its longevity is below average, lasting less than 4 hours. The shade also pulls quite yellow, so go one shade lighter.

My Honest Take:

  • Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion: ❌ Complete skip. I don't know who this cushion is for. If you want glow, go for a truly glowy cushion. If you want high coverage for oily skin, TIRTIR or Espoir are far better.
  • Hince Second Skin Mesh Matte Cushion: This isn't for oily skin despite "matte" in the name. It's best for normal to combo skin types who need minimal coverage and want a light, natural base for short wear or touch-ups. It feels more comfortable on the skin, but don't expect it to last all day.

Verdict:

  • Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion: ❌ Absolute worst. Skip.
  • Hince Second Skin Mesh Matte Cushion: ✔️ For normal to combo skin, light coverage, short wear, natural look. ❌ Not for oily skin or long wear.

The Glowy Contenders: Hydration Meets Coverage

For those of us who prefer a more radiant, hydrated look, glowy cushions are the answer. But finding one that offers decent coverage without feeling heavy can be a challenge.

✔️ JUNGSAEMMOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion

The Hype: Jung Saem Mool is often called the "Korean Bobby Brown," and her products, especially this cushion, have been a long-time favorite among makeup artists and consumers alike.

The Reality:

  • The Best of Both Worlds: This cushion truly hits the sweet spot between moisturizing and high coverage – a rare find. While many matte cushions offer high cover but can look powdery, and many glowy cushions offer low cover, Jung Saem Mool manages to do both well.
  • Ideal for Mature Skin: It's incredibly popular among women over 40 in Korea, especially for covering concerns like melasma and hyperpigmentation without looking heavy or powdery.
  • Great Shade for Redness: The shade pulls a bit more yellow than some others, which is fantastic for neutralizing redness or rosacea. They also offer a good variety of shades, including options for darker complexions.
  • Professional Endorsement: I even had this cushion used on me for my wedding day makeup! It's a testament to its quality and versatility.

My Honest Take: While it offers pretty high coverage, which I don't always need for daily wear, it's an exceptional product. If you have dry, mature skin (especially over 45) and are looking for a cushion that provides good coverage for hyperpigmentation or melasma without looking white or cakey, this is your holy grail.

Verdict: ✔️ Highly recommended for dry/mature skin, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and those seeking a balance of glow and coverage.

❌ fwee Cushion Glass Natural

The Hype: The name "Glass Natural" suggests a dewy, transparent, glass-skin finish.

The Reality:

  • Misleading Name: This cushion is anything but "glass natural." It's thick and semi-matte, completely contradicting its name.
  • Dull Formula: While shade 1.5 is prettier and brighter than Jung Saem Mool's, the formula itself is dull. Any "essence" claims are barely noticeable.
  • Poor Reception: This cushion received bad reviews in Korea, so much so that the brand had to bring back an older version.
  • Similar to Parnell: Like the Parnell cushion, it fails to appeal to either dry/mature skin (no glow) or oily/combo skin (low coverage).

My Honest Take: Don't waste your money on this one. The name is misleading, the formula is disappointing, and it simply doesn't deliver on its promises.

Verdict: ❌ Pass. Don't waste your money.

Final Thoughts

Navigating the world of K-beauty cushions can be overwhelming, but I hope this brutally honest review helps you make informed choices. Remember, what works for one person might not work for another, and understanding your skin type and concerns is key.

For my dry, mature skin, the Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion is a clear winner, offering that perfect balance of moisture and coverage. If you're battling oil and need serious staying power, the TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion or espoir Pro Tailor Be Velvet Cover Cushion could be your match, but proceed with caution and good skincare prep.

Ultimately, the goal is to find products that make your skin look and feel good, not just follow the latest trend. Don't be afraid to skip the hype if it doesn't align with your skin's needs.

FAQ

Q: What is CYoung's skin type and concerns?

A: CYoung has dry, sensitive, and thin skin, which can lean more combination in humid conditions. Her primary concerns include smile lines, wrinkles around the eyes, and visible pores, especially when using powdery products.

Q: What is the current K-beauty makeup trend?

A: The current K-beauty makeup trend favors a "makeup no makeup" look, emphasizing natural, transparent, and effortless finishes rather than heavy, full-coverage makeup.

Q: Are cushion foundations suitable for mature skin?

A: Yes, some cushion foundations are excellent for mature skin. CYoung specifically recommends the Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion for dry, mature skin over 45, especially for covering hyperpigmentation and melasma without looking powdery or cakey.

Q: How do I choose the right cushion shade?

A: Always check swatches and reviews, as shades can vary significantly between brands. CYoung notes that TIRTIR cushions, for example, run deeper and warmer than typical Korean cushions, so you might need to go one to two shades lighter than your usual. Hince shades can pull yellow, also suggesting going one shade lighter.

Q: Why are some viral K-beauty cushions not popular in Korea?

A: Many cushions that go viral internationally might not be popular in Korea because they don't align with local beauty trends. For instance, TIRTIR cushions are considered too heavy and matte for the current Korean preference for natural, transparent, and lighter coverage.
