Haruharu Wonder Review: The Honest Truth About K-Beauty's Viral Black Rice Line

•14 min read•By CYoung

The Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream, Facial Oil, and Deep Cleansing Oil are great. The Toner, Sunscreens, and Centella TXA Serum are soso. The Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence and Hyaluronic Cream are skips. Tested on dry, oily, and sensitive skin types.

Alright, my skincare family! You asked, and I delivered. It's time for another brutally honest brand deep dive, and this time, we're tackling a brand that's been absolutely everywhere on social media: Haruharu Wonder.

Is Haruharu Wonder actually good, or is it just clever marketing? You know I don't do sponsorships, so I bought these products with my own money to give you the real deal. To make sure this review was as comprehensive as possible, I teamed up with my amazing co-makeup artist friends, Yuna and Sally. We put 11 of Haruharu Wonder's most viral K-beauty products to the test across three completely different skin types:

  • Me (CYoung): Dry, mature, sensitive skin.
  • Yuna: Dry, mature skin.
  • Sally: Oily, combo, younger skin.

We're categorizing every item into three tiers, so you know exactly what to spend your hard-earned money on, and what to skip:

  • ✅ GREAT: The holy grails worth every penny.
  • ⚠️ SOSO: Good, but highly dependent on your skin type. You might like it, you might not.
  • ❌ NO: Save your money. Do not buy.

Ready? Let's get started!

The Black Rice Line: Essence & Cream

The Black Rice line is Haruharu Wonder's most popular, especially on social media. I grabbed the essence and cream to see if they live up to the hype.

❌ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence

The Hype: A thick, nourishing essence to strengthen your skin barrier. My Honest Take: This one is a hard pass for me.

First, let's talk about the packaging. It's a heavy glass bottle with an old-school pump. Why, Haruharu, why? After postpartum, my bones are not good, and I just don't want to carry heavy stuff. It's not practical.

Now, the formula itself. This is basically a lotion, not an essence.

  • For Oily or Combo Skin (Sally's experience): Skip it. Seriously. Look at the ingredient list – oils are right at the top. If your T-zone is already oily, you're just adding another layer of oil on top. It ends up feeling shiny, heavy, and kind of suffocating.
  • For Dry or Mature Skin (My experience): I'd still skip it. The absorption is just too slow. I tested it side-by-side with Numbuzin No. 9 and VT PDRN, and those absorb quickly and feel comfortable. This one just sits there. Your skin looks oily on the surface but still feels dry underneath. It just feels like a film.

So why is it trending on Reddit? Because the reactions are extreme. Some people love it, some people break out. That's because of the fermented ingredients like galactomyces, bifida, and aspergillus. If it works for you, you get that glow. If it doesn't, your skin freaks out. I didn't break out, but the texture and results just aren't worth it.

Verdict: ❌ NO. Save your money. Go for VT PDRN or Numbuzin No. 9 instead.

❌ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Hyaluronic Cream

The Hype: A rich, hydrating cream for deep moisture. My Honest Take: Another miss from the Black Rice line.

This also comes in a jar, which feels a bit old-school. I think they wanted to appeal to a "thick cream" vibe, but the texture inside is just okay. It's creamy, but it leaves a similar greasy and tacky feeling on the skin as the essence.

My younger, oily-skinned friends (Sally) didn't give this good points because of that tacky feeling. When you think about ceramides, like the Estra moisturizer that was so popular last year in Korea, those can restore your skin barrier without feeling tacky. This one just doesn't measure up. It feels like it's sitting on top of the skin rather than truly moisturizing.

Verdict: ❌ NO. There are much better, more modern cream formulas out there that won't leave you feeling sticky.

Toner & Specialty Serum

Next up, a toner that I once loved, and a dark spot serum.

⚠️ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner Free of Alcohol Fragrance

The Hype: A hydrating toner to prep your skin. My Honest Take: This one is a "soso" for me now.

I actually loved this toner when I first tried it, but K-beauty formulas have improved so much lately. Haruharu Wonder offers both scented (lavender) and unscented versions. If you're sensitive to fragrance, definitely go unscented because the lavender is strong.

The formula feels a bit outdated. It absorbs slowly and feels slightly slippery. If you try to layer it twice, it gets sticky.

  • Best for: Dry, mature skin. That's where it works best.
  • For Oily, Combo, or Sensitive Skin: You'll likely find it too heavy or slow to absorb.

Once you try something better, it's hard to go back. For me, TIRTIR's toners offer faster absorption, are fragrance-free, lightweight, and perfect for oily, combo, sensitive skin, summer, and even for guys. TIRTIR wins for me all day. Haruharu isn't bad, but it really comes down to preference, and my preference has shifted.

Verdict: ⚠️ SOSO. It's okay, but there are better options available now.

⚠️ Haruharu WONDER Centella 4% TXA Dark Spot Go Away Serum

The Hype: A serum to fade dark spots with Centella and TXA. My Honest Take: This one is also a "soso."

To be honest, my friends didn't use it long enough to see significant dark spot fading, and I don't have many dark spots myself, so I can't speak to its efficacy for that specific claim.

However, it's definitely a gel-type serum. It's not too heavy for hydration. If you have oily or combo skin, especially in the summer, it does its job as a basic hydrating gel serum. It's not bad, but it's not a standout either.

Verdict: ⚠️ SOSO. It's fine for hydration, but the dark spot fading claim is unconfirmed by our testing.

Eye Cream & Facial Oil

Now for some products that actually impressed us!

✅ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream

The Hype: A gentle, anti-aging eye cream with bakuchiol. My Honest Take: This goes straight into the "great" category!

One thing I can't really handle is the scent. Bakuchiol, for anyone who knows it, can smell a bit like... well, trash. So, it's a little painful if you apply it right under your nose, but I still give it a great score because the texture is just so good.

Many eye creams can be too heavy, especially for oily or combo skin, or for younger ladies who are afraid of getting milia. But this one doesn't cause those issues. It's very easy to use with its pump type packaging.

Bakuchiol is also a great replacement for retinol if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or too sensitive to retinol. Just a heads-up: bakuchiol isn't great for everyone – some people still break out, so keep that in mind. But otherwise, it's a fantastic, affordable way to start using an eye cream, both before makeup and at night.

Verdict: ✅ GREAT! Despite the scent, the texture and efficacy make it a winner.

✅ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Facial Oil

The Hype: A nourishing facial oil for a healthy glow. My Honest Take: This is a "great" for me and Yuna, but a "no" for Sally!

This is very interesting because we all agreed this isn't like a really heavy oil; it's more "oil-like." It's really easy to apply. You can use it as a top coat, instead of Vaseline, or just to seal in your skincare. I also tried mixing one drop into my moisturizer, and it was amazing for my dry, mature skin because it didn't make it too oily but still provided that extra seal.

  • For Dry/Mature Skin (CYoung & Yuna): ✅ GREAT! It's not too heavy, easy to use, doesn't cause breakouts or pimples. I also love the size.
  • For Oily/Combo Skin (Sally's experience): ❌ NO. Sally loves using devices for massage, and for that, you need an oil that stays on the skin for a while. Because this is more "oil-like" and absorbs pretty quickly compared to 100% pure oils, she felt it just went away and wasn't appropriate for massage.

Con: It has a strong, slightly lavenderish scent. If you're sensitive to that, keep it in mind.

Verdict: ✅ GREAT for dry/mature skin looking for a lightweight, sealing oil. ❌ NO for oily skin or those who need a true massage oil.

Sun Care Essentials

Sunscreen is non-negotiable! Let's see how Haruharu Wonder's offerings stack up.

⚠️ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Moisture Airyfit Sunscreen

The Hype: A lightweight, moisturizing sunscreen with a comfortable finish. My Honest Take: This one is a "soso."

This sunscreen is really popular on social media. The finish is okay, and the texture feels amazing before makeup. I also love the pretty packaging.

However, the scent is a big issue for me. It's quite strong. I even opened a new one to check if it was just an old bottle, but even the fresh one smelled the same. When you compare it to other popular K-beauty sunscreens like Beauty of Joseon or Round Lab, their scents are much milder. If you're sensitive to fragrance, this might bother you.

Verdict: ⚠️ SOSO. Good texture and finish, but the strong scent is a drawback.

⚠️ Haruharu WONDER Black Bamboo Daily Soothing Sun Shield (Sunstick)

The Hype: An easy-to-apply sunstick for on-the-go protection. My Honest Take: This is another "soso," and honestly, you can probably save your money.

People use sunsticks because they're lazy and want quick, easy application, right? I felt that AHC sunsticks work better because they're bigger and easier to apply quickly.

This Haruharu sunstick is a little smaller, and I found it a bit greasy. For oily or combo skin, it can feel like too much. I wish it were a little thicker or harder in texture.

Verdict: ⚠️ SOSO. It's okay, but there are better, more convenient sunsticks out there.

Cleansing Duo

Double cleansing is key! Let's break down their cleansing oil and gel.

✅ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Moisture Deep Cleansing Oil

The Hype: A deep cleansing oil to remove makeup and impurities. My Honest Take: This is a "great" for me, but a "no" for Sally!

This is another product where our skin types led to completely different verdicts.

  • For Dry/Mature Skin (CYoung & Yuna): ✅ GREAT! I don't mind a slightly thicker texture. This cleansing oil feels a little creamy and well-made. It feels good on my dry, mature skin.
  • For Oily/Combo Skin (Sally's experience): ❌ NO. Sally, who loves the Anua cleansing oil (which is very lightweight and water-like), found this Haruharu one too thick. It feels a bit like Banila Co.'s cleansing balm, which many oily/combo skin types dislike because it feels too heavy.

Verdict: ✅ GREAT for dry/mature skin that prefers a slightly thicker, creamy cleansing oil. ❌ NO for oily/combo skin that prefers lightweight, water-like cleansing oils (like Mixsoon, Round Lab, Anua, or Numbuzin).

✅ Haruharu WONDER Black Rice Moisture Soft Cleansing Gel

The Hype: A gentle, low-pH cleansing gel. My Honest Take: This is a "great" for me!

It's not that common to see cleansing gels in K-beauty; it's usually cleansing foams. When I lathered this up, it didn't bubble much because it's a low-acidic cleanser. This makes it fantastic for a second cleanse if you double cleanse, or as a morning cleanser if you still feel oily.

It won't really erase heavy makeup well, so don't expect that. But for anyone with really sensitive, red-prone skin who needs a mild cleanser, this is great. It doesn't make much foam, but it feels so soft, and after washing off, my skin isn't tight at all. It feels really moisturizing.

If you're looking for a cleanser that supports your skin barrier and won't strip your skin, this can be a good one.

Verdict: ✅ GREAT! Especially for sensitive, dry, or barrier-compromised skin, or as a gentle morning cleanser.

Final Thoughts

So, how was it? Did you edit your cart? Hopefully, this deep dive into Haruharu Wonder was helpful!

Overall, Haruharu Wonder is a brand with some hits and some misses. Their Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream, Facial Oil (for dry skin), and Cleansing Gel and Oil (again, for dry skin) are definitely worth checking out. However, some of their more viral products, like the Black Rice Essence and Cream, just didn't live up to the hype for us, especially with so many innovative K-beauty formulas on the market today.

Remember, skincare is personal, but knowing what works for different skin types can save you a lot of money and disappointment. Always consider your own skin's needs before jumping on the next viral trend!

FAQ

Q1: Is Haruharu Wonder good for sensitive skin?

A1: It depends on the product. The Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream and Black Rice Moisture Soft Cleansing Gel were well-received for sensitive skin. However, some products contain fermented ingredients or strong fragrances (like the scented toner or sunscreens) that might irritate very sensitive skin. Always patch test new products.

Q2: Which Haruharu Wonder products are best for oily skin?

A2: For oily skin, many of the Black Rice line products (like the Essence, Cream, and even the thicker Cleansing Oil) might feel too heavy or greasy. The Centella 4% TXA Dark Spot Go Away Serum could work as a light hydrating gel, and the Black Rice Moisture Soft Cleansing Gel is a good gentle morning cleanser. However, for sunscreens and cleansing oils, there are often better, lighter options from other brands.

Q3: Are Haruharu Wonder products good for anti-aging?

A3: The Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream is a great, affordable option for anti-aging, especially for those who are sensitive to retinol or are pregnant/breastfeeding. Bakuchiol is a known anti-aging ingredient. Other products in the Black Rice line aim for hydration and barrier support, which are crucial for healthy, youthful-looking skin, but their efficacy varies.

Q4: Why are some Haruharu Wonder products so popular on social media but not highly rated by CYoung?

A4: Social media trends often highlight products that have unique textures or strong initial effects, or are simply well-marketed. CYoung's reviews focus on long-term performance, ingredient lists, absorption, and how products feel on different skin types, especially mature and sensitive skin, which can differ significantly from younger skin often featured in viral content.
