Skincare Microaggression Confessions
What small skincare missteps do you commit that may slowly sabotage your skin over time? I'll go first!
🦞 On days when I put styling products in my hair prior to skincare, I often forget to wash the residue off my hands before applying topicals until it's too late. This keeps products from absorbing, causes clogged pores, and contributes to irritation.
🌋 Neglecting to rinse cleansing foam trapped in my hairline. Surfactants shouldn't sit on the skin! Same issues as above. I notice that especially around my temples, there's lingering redness.
🛠️ I solemnly swear to rinse and start over...

Cute Lobster plush 🦞
Thank you! He's the new sensitive skin mascot.
I have diagnosed OCD so I wash my hands too much lol but I have made the mistake of pushing my skin too hard by trying to force products on that I wanted to work so badly I didn’t listen to my skin when it was crying that it was too much.
Yep! Been there.
love the plush! also not zoning out in the middle of the routine and putting hair serum on my face, then having to wash my face again to start it all over again lol.
I have ADHD...this is too real. Have you ever put cleanser on your toothbrush?
@hazelmoss haha hasn't happened to me yet😂🫠
I had to think about it! I have some in mind: 🛑 The Blemish Twitch: Catching sight of a tiny whitehead in the mirror and reflexively trying to give it a quick squeeze 🚿 Selective Shower Aftercare: I am religious about misting and sealing my face the second I step out of the shower, but my body and feet? Totally neglected unless my skin is actively screaming at me and feeling like sandpaper. 🦶 The Foot Care Blind Spot: Completely ignoring dry feet and heels for months. 😴 Chronic Sleep Deprivation: Sacrificing sleep hours at night and then expecting eye serums and barrier creams to somehow do the biological repair work that only 7 hours of sleep can actually do! 😂
😅 But if we slept better, what would they sell us? Very relatable all around! And my attention to my feet is born from the trauma of inquisitive nieces and nephews.
Oh man that last one is so relatable. I didn’t even think about it, but it’s so true
Has anyone accidentally used body soap as a face cleanser…
I have, it was not a fun time for my skin after that
No, but I have put it in my hair! 😶🌫️
My biggest skin microaggression is definitely skin picking. 😬 I have excoriation disorder (a body focused obsessive compulsion like tricotillomania) So I will often pick without even realizing it. The compulsion to pick at my skin until I remove everything from a blemish and of course leave a nice big wound gets worse when I'm overly anxious. Which is even better because I also have GAD!/s 🫠👍 A big part of my skincare journey has been about managing the compulsion actually. My brilliant thinking 😅: ✨️Can't pick at blemishes if there aren't any blemishes to pick at! ✨️
That's such a hard one because a compulsion is so much more than absentmindedness. I pick too but it's more of an AuDHD stim or because my skin is irritated. If the irritation is gone or my anxiety is low, then the need to pick goes away. My mother used to tell me that my lips would turn black one day if I kept picking them. It wasn't until university that I stopped long enough to think about that threat and realize it hadn't ever come true. (Because I certainly never left my lips alone.) 😅 She conveniently doesn't remember saying this.
@hazelmoss No yeah, your description is very familiar to me. I use several methods to manage the compulsion besides keeping blemishes to a minimum, like trying to reduce anxiety or to keep my hands busy with something else. But yes, the irritation! I can FEEL it under my skin and it's so uncomfortable and irritating, and then the overwhelming feeling of relief that comes when the irritation is gone and upur brain calms down is in a way addictive. I too am a lip picker! I've been trying so hard to not do it as much. Lips won't turn black like your mom doesn't remember saying 😂, but it continues the cycle of dryness and rapid turnover of skin. That "excessive exfoliation" isn't obviously 'ideal' and I personally am concerned about the increased risk of developing cancer in the area. That Creme Balm was really good for the dryness though.
@Elizabeth Do you ever wish you had an exoskeleton you could step out of when the irritation takes over? The very deep feeling of irritation and the nagging of it, I'm not sure everyone understands. The creme balm is a [expletive] lifesaver! I will definitely finish one of the tubes by the end of this month and I will go into debt if I have to in order to get more. I've never had a balm actually heal the skin on my lips.
@hazelmoss Omg yes! If I could just step outside of my body instead of having to feel it! The nagging is so constant I'm like, I don't care if I bleed, I NEED this feeling to stop. Right? The Creme Balm is so healing, definitely will be purchasing it for myself as well. I've never encountered a balm that made my lips feel so "normal", absolutely amazing 👏
@hazelmoss et.al. Yes. I can fully relate to quite a few of these. I grabbed my husband's shaving lotion and rubbed it into my face as well as used the Medicube Booster Pro. Pain, thy name is a distracted mind. Reason? Similar bottles. At least it was a Korean men's product so the damage could have been worse. Felt kind of nice, actually 😂
😂 I'm glad you used a product meant to create slip and reduce irritation. I swear this is why I have to line up all of my products in order of use otherwise I'm my own worst enemy. The trouble is, there isn't always enough room on the counter for one long line. Once the products start to form ranks, I might reach for anything.
@hazelmoss Have you been peeping over my shoulder? 😅🤣😂
@Annie Maybe we don't need better skincare. Maybe we need personal assistants to hand us things. 🙋🏼♀️
@hazelmoss The craic would be ninety! 😄😁😀
