Jars & Pots: Aesthetically Appealing Cosmetic Menaces and What to Do About Them

The human species' relationship with jars and pots dates back ~20,000 years. Famous jar enthusiasts include Winnie the Pooh, Earl Tupper, Ethel Monticue, and the four sons of Horus.

Over time, we've developed a consciousness about jars. A glass jar, for example, creates an aesthetic je ne sais quoi that a plastic jar does not. Peanut butter in a glass jar is known to be five times more nutritious than peanut butter in a plastic jar. This fact is backed up by the price and the layer of oil you have to mix in yourself. My friend's mother, a maker of homemade jams, claimed that her apple jelly always tasted best in tiny jars (and tended to reserve these for her own use). We have Opinions about jars.

In cosmetics and skincare, many of us like the IDEA of products packaged jars or pots. We may be drawn to them like moths. But do we actually like them?

Given the collection of unused Laneige lip masks congregating in my Temu shoe drawers...the answer is perhaps a type of cosmetic limerence.

Troubles:

  • Sensory disquietude...don't make me dunk my fingers in that.
  • Sanitation...I've dunked my fingers in that.
  • Dosing...squeezing a pea-sized amount from a tube is easier than trying to scoop it out.
  • Accessory to the crime: tiny spatulas! The missing sock of the skincare industry.

What do we do with the products we've been avoiding because of their packaging? Fortunately, I have a cunning plan: Bulk DIY and durable travel size cosmetic bottles and compacts for decanting. You don't have to go on vacation to utilize travel bottles. Durable and aesthetically pleasing containers can be found easily online for very low prices. And they can be reused!

What do you need?

  • A sanitation method to avoid product contamination upon transfer.
  • Travel bottles for creams, lotions, and masks on the go.
  • Cosmetic cream pump bottles for creams, lotions, and masks at home.
  • DIY Wide-Mouth Lip Gloss Tubes for loose lip gels.
  • DIY Lip balm jars with lip applicator storage included (for stiff, waxy lip masks).
  • Decanting spatulas, syringes, pipettes, and/or funnels as necessary.
  • Silicone brushes for use with lip masks and glosses in their current packaging.
  • Old packaging you've saved because you just might find a use for it one day (Bohogirl75!)

Bonus:

  • Continuous Mist Spray Bottles (Mariacasino)

Maybe you love jars but you hate trying to rub toner onto your face before it slips through your fingers. Or the spray mechanism on your product's packaging sucks. Don't suffer through it. Reusable spray bottles comes in many sizes and colors to suit your needs.

Don't let the packaging get you done!

@hazelmoss I feel so called out by the continuous mist shoutout! 😂 Guilty as charged, a fine continuous mist is non-negotiable! But you are so right about the aesthetic trap of jars. Look at that VT PDRN Capsule Cream jar... suspended mint-green little caviar spheres in clear glass! How is any human supposed to resist that visual dopamine? It’s pure cosmetic hypnotic trance until you actually have to scoop one out with a spatula without launching it across the tiles. And justice for the Laneige lip pots! In the summer, my boring SPF stick does the job just fine. But now with dry winter radiators and freezing winds? Give me my Laneige berry pot every three hours or I turn completely feral. The dry lip desperation completely cures my jar-dunking aversion! 🍓🥶
