Topical Probiotic Review Paper

An interesting paper I found from 2022 talking about the skin's microbiome and how imbalances in it contributes to certain skin diseases like Acne, Psoriasis, Rosacea, etc. Also talks about current probiotic uses and what studies there have been on using probiotics topically.

@Elizabeth Thank you for sharing this paper! It’s always refreshing to dig into peer-reviewed literature rather than relying on brand marketing claims. 🧬📄 The authors deserve credit for being straightforward about the state of the field: the human clinical evidence for topical probiotics remains very early and limited. Most popular K-beauty products marketed under the 'microbiome' umbrella, like Galactomyces, Bifida, or Lactobacillus essences and sheet masks, do not contain live bacteria. What ends up in those bottles are lysates or ferment filtrates (postbiotics), which can support the barrier, but they do not colonize the skin or alter the living microbiome. I think we should rely on nutrition, fiber, and fermented foods (if tolerated) if you actually want the systemic biological benefits of live organisms!

Yeah, I learnt that lesson the hard way when I used a Vitamin C powder for skincare once and IT annihilated my skin 🥲 Took weeks until my barrier recovered and I got so many pimples
