Worst Skincare Advice You've Received?

What is the worst skincare advice you've received?

A friend's mother told me that getting pregnant would resolve my hormone and psoriasis issues. 😳

"You wash your face too much, that is why your skin is dry" As well as "you don't need creams to hydrate, let your natural oils do the job" - husband, male, with oily skin I mean it's the worst advice but I didn't follow it! To be honest I tried washing less and I had breakups. I wash just with water in the morning and double cleansing in the evening.

Thanks, honey, I'm going to watch CYoung on YouTube instead. Washing with just water in the morning is great. I had to learn the hard way that I didn't need a cleanser, especially if I showered. And I used to have oily skin! How do you double cleanse? If I apply two cleansers to my entire face, it incites the 🦞. But I do remove eye makeup with micellar water before using a foam or milk cleanser. So does that count as a double cleanse?

@hazelmoss Yes, that 100% counts as a double cleanse! Double cleansing just means breaking down stubborn, lipophilic layers (pigments, water-resistant SPF polymers) with a first gentle solvent before washing. If micellar water on the eyes + a milk cleanser on the face keeps your barrier calm and breakout-free, you are doing it perfectly! For my full double cleanse, I use an emulsifying oil cleanser (SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil. I love it, I'm at the second bottle) followed by a gentle water-based mousse wash. The key to avoiding the 🦞 flare with oil cleansing is making sure it's an emulsifying formula with light esters, not raw oils. You massage it gently on dry skin for just 30 seconds to dissolve retinal/SPF, add a splash of water to turn it into a milky emulsion, and rinse it completely clean with water first. The second step (the mousse) barely has to work at all, it's just a quick, non-stripping pass to leave the skin fresh without any rubbing friction!

@Mariacasino Thanks! When I'm not in barrier jail using very basic cleanser, I've been struggling to find an oil cleanser that doesn't hurt (even SKIN1004 is to harsh), so I've either been using a milky cleanser like Make Prem Safe Me or a cleansing ampoule like Iunik Beta Glucan cleanser. I don't need micellar water for eye makeup if I use Iunik. Gel to foam cleansers that I've tried are too stripping. But the Etude whip cleanser is amazing and silky. So I think maybe a combo of milky and moussey bubble cleansers might be a good combo when I'm ready to wear foundation again. We'll see. Lobster does what it wants.

@Mariacasino I normally do not like cleansing oils but I tried the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil based on your recommendation and I was so pleasantly surprised that I didn't hate it at all. I even kind of enjoy it. Definitely keeping it. It really is a very excellent product so thank you! 😊

@Elizabeth I'm happy you didn't hate it 😅 you can always gift it to your "friends" otherwise. I'm just joking, I'm happy you found something that works for you!

@hazelmoss they prescribed anti conceptional pill to my sister for her acne... I guess the reasoning is similar!

"Mom, why did you decide to have kids?" "To improve my psoriasis and neuroendocrine disorder." 😅 It just seems like a very permanent approach for incurable conditions. Sadly, the lady who told me that was a nurse assistant. Given her generation, I think I can understand Gen X even better. Their parents were having babies for a treatment plan!

@hazelmoss Prescribing an entire human child for an autoimmune flare-up is wild, especially from medical staff! 🫠 Incredible how some people forget that modern medicine can regulate hormones and immune pathways directly without needing a whole pregnancy as a delivery system.

@Mariacasino The amount of kids I'd have to counter every flare up... 👀

I’m not sure if this counts as skincare advice but when I moved back from Japan (where everyone practices sun avoidance) to California (where people are obsessed with sun exposure) I was told that avoiding the sun wasn’t natural or healthy, especially since I’m Mexican. I was told that because I’m Mexican that I need more sun exposure particularly on my face because it can’t be healthy for me to be as pale as I am. I was like “no thanks, future me with be grateful”. It’s been a decade and I have no regrets lol

That definitely counts as bad skincare advice! I think keeping your skin in California is probably ill-advised, in general. Says me, in my midwest basement in a house surrounded by trees and a gazillion lakes and moisture-producing corn fields. 👀

@hazelmoss I live in the Midwest now but no matter where I travel or live, I stay out of the sun like a vampire 😂 it doesn’t help me look any less sickly from all my autoimmune and other health issues but at least I’ll look younger and sick as opposed to older and less sick 😂

Using just water in the morning, anti- dandruff shampoo only three times per week and ketoconazol once per week on the face after a few weeks of treatment. Not enough. I also remember hearing that using too much skincare will age you faster, I had acne and that wasn't going to disappear on its own, in any case it gets worse if you don't do anything and it gives you "beautiful" scars to remember it. Also; for some people, using three things is somehow, too much....
